Poverty Reduction and Health

Poverty under Palm Trees

In the Philippines there are approximately 400 million coconut palms on more than 7,000 islands. Formerly exploited by their Spanish colonial masters, today the coconut palms provide the raw material for many different products of international trade and are therefore the basis for the Philippine economy.

Millennium Development Goals

In 2000 the UN agreed upon eight Millennium Development Goals, which shall contribute to halve poverty worldwide by 2015. This poster series gives a detailed description about the implications arising from the goals for the Filipino coconut farmers and their chances of implementing them in this Southern Asian country.

Basic Income Grant

Since January 2008 1,000 people have received 100,- Namibia Dollars (approximately 8,- €) in the small village of Otjivero as a basic income. Resulting from an idea of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Republic of Namibia, the small village of Otjivero shall serve to check the effect, if all residents receive a basic monthly income from the state.

Genital Female Mutilation

Educational File on Female Genital Mutilation

We provide an educational file on the topic of female genital mutilation (Ed. Terre des Femmes) which may be borrowed with accompanying illustrative material for the intermediate and advanced grades. This file encourages female and male teachers to include the issue of female genital mutilation in their lessons. Its aim is to inform adolescents about this form of human rights violation, making them aware of and motivating them to intervene in this process.

Topics:

1. An 80-page educational file on female genital mutilation (with a preface by Waris Dirie)

2. Poster "A Wonderful Feast"

3. Questionnaire for Female and Male Teachers (4-page)

4. COMIC - Diariatou Relating to Tradition

5. Flyer: We Will Protect our Daughters (in German, English, French and Arabic)

The educational file aims at establishing understanding for African contexts, at the same time it wants to show that female genital mutilation is an intolerable violation of girls’ and women’s rights. Please direct all questions by E-Mail or tel. 0231 5409-75 to Marlies Kaminiarz.
