For about the last twenty years some church congregations and recently also three church districts of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia have maintained partnerships with the Church of England. The results of the so-called Meissen Conference in 1988 were ground-breaking. Named after East Germany’s city of Meißen, where delegations of the Anglican Church in England, the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and the Federation of the Evangelical Churches in the German Democratic Republic were meeting and signing agreements with regard to a church community – the so-called Meissen Declaration.

Some local partnerships between church congregations in England and Westphalia have come into existence on a practical and close-to-the-community level. Congregations in Dortmund, Schwerte, Bielefeld, Recklinghausen and Witten started with visits and encounters, thus contributing to reconciliation work between Germany and England. In 2007 the Evangelical Congregation of Witten-Annen sealed the long-term partnership with an official local ecumenical partnership as well as an LEP-contract, thus enabling reverends to perform official duties in England or Westphalia.
