Partnerships with Indonesia
Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP)
The HKBP was founded by Dr. Ingwer Ludwig Nommensen who came from Nordstrand in Germany. In 1861 Dr. Nommensen was sent as a Reverend of the Rhenish Missionary Society to Sumatra where he tried – in contrast to various other missionaries – to live like a native. He particularly gained the trust of the Batak for the medical assistance work he performed.
In 1864 Dr. Nommensen was responsible for the building of the first church and in 1883 he started the formation of local reverends. His congregation in Silindung increased to about 4,000 members. Later he moved to Pearadja-Tarutung und christianized almost all Batak people. In 1918 – the year of his death – the HKBP comprised more than 500 congregations with about 180,000 members.
Today the HKBP includes approximately 3 million members and is therefore one of the largest Evangelical churches in South East Asia. At present the HKBP is making every effort to seek interreligious dialogue due to current tensions between Christians and Muslims in Indonesia.
In the MÖWe Institute Reverend Matthias Elsermann is concerned with the work of the HKBP (matthias.elsermann@moewe-westfalen.de). The Church District of Luedenscheid-Plettenberg maintains a partnership with the HKBP.
Gereja Punguan Kristen Batak (GPKB)
Die GBKP is another Evangelical Church on Sumatra. In the MÖWe Institute Reverend Beate Hessler (beate.hessler@moewe-westfalen.de) is concerned with the work of the GBKP. The Church District of Steinfurt-Coesfeld-Borken maintains an Indonesian partnership with the GBKP.
