CEC - Conference of European Churches

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) is a fellowship of 126 Orthodox, Protestant and Old Catholic Churches as well as 43 associated organisations in all countries of the European continent. The CEC was founded in 1959 and maintains offices in Geneva, Brussels and Strasburg.

Christians of different confessions have committed themselves to common life and witness in a spirit of ecumenism, sharing, mutual understanding and respect. They were doing so despite historical rifts and many linguistic, geographical and economic barriers which exist on the European continent. Churches jointly stand up for the unity of the church and advocate a common Christian witness towards people and institutions in Europe. The mutual desire for living in peace and for promoting justice and reconciliation has enabled churches to maintain their community in the CEC for 45 years.

In 2001 the CEC and the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) jointly signed the “Charta Oecumenica – Guidelines for an Increase in Cooperation between Churches in Europe”. Churches throughout Europe are called to put the "Charta Oecumenica" into practice and to adapt it according to their local needs.

The ecumenical diversity became apparent during the three European Ecumenical Assemblies in Basle/Switzerland (1989), Graz/Austria (1997) and Sibiu/Romania (2008) which were hosted by the CEC and the CCEE.
